Sidewalk Labs, the Alphabet-owned company building a smart city from the ground-up in Toronto, has a launched a new outfit, CityBlock. The firm will provide personalised health services to those who live in US urban neighbourhoods that have traditionally gone without good health provision.

“Healthcare is inconvenient, inconsistent, and often misses the key factors that impact your life, like having housing, food, a job, and a social network,” says CityBlock. “We believe that working through local communities to address these issues is the key to making care better.”

The outfit points out that nearly all innovation efforts in this space to date have been focused on people with means, despite urgent need in underserved lower-income communities.

CityBlock says it is now aiming to shift the care balance toward prevention and community support. “We've brought together doctors, operations experts, social workers and engineers committed to innovating in care delivery in the Medicaid space.”
