Close to 70% of EU nationals working as scientists, engineers and specialists are aiming to leave the UK because of Brexit. According to a member survey conducted by union Prospect, the percentage seeking to quit the country has spiked from just 11% earlier in 2017.
Almost 80% of say they feel less welcome than they did a year ago, with members reporting feeling ‘betrayed’, ‘unwanted’ and ‘becoming a foreigner in a country’ they were previously welcomed into.
“Our feedback shows that the government is squandering the UK’s reputation as an attractive place for foreign talent,” says Sue Ferns, Prospect deputy general secretary. “It also highlights a fundamental misunderstanding of the modern work environment in which skilled and specialist workers can choose where to live and work, but they do not do so in isolation.”
