IBM is proposing the deployment of blockchain technology to track supplies of marijuana as they journey along the supply chain from grower through to consumers to support Canada’s legalisation of cannabis sales in 2018.

IBM says blockchain’s application to regulating cannabis would be similar to its use in sectors such as pharmaceutical distribution and food chains. “The core to those supply chains is the same, assuring health and safety of consumers, preventing fraud and counterfeiting while creating a foundation of transparency upon which to base regulation,” it adds.
