The world has its first ‘robot citizen’ in the shape of Sophia, who has been granted a passport by Saudi Arabia at the Future Investment Initiative in Riyadh. Sophia, designed by Hanson Robotics, has already addressed several technology congresses to pass on the message that artificial intelligence is good for the world, while her stated task is to help us all live a better lives.
In Saudi, Sophia was asked if robots have consciousness and self-awareness. Clearly riffing on Blade Runner, she replied, “Well, how do you know you are human?”
Staying with the movies theme, Hanson says it has designed Sophia to look like Audrey Hepburn with ‘porcelain skin, a slender nose, high cheekbones, an intriguing smile, and deeply expressive eyes that seem to change colour with the light’ though that’s something of a leap for us.
“Sophia is an evolving genius machine,” Hanson maintains. “Over time, her increasing intelligence and remarkable story will enchant the world and connect with people regardless of age, gender, and culture.”
