Amazon is opening a German artificial intelligence research centre in Tübingen, in partnership with the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems, creating 100 jobs over the next five years.

The online retail giant is investing $1.5 million in the initiative, which is part of the Cyber Valley collaborative project launched last year to focus on AI, robotics, machine learning, and computer vision. Founder members include the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems, the University of Tübingen and the University of Stuttgart plus commercial partners BMW, Facebook, IAV, Daimler, Porsche, Robert Bosch and ZF Friedrichshafen.

Cyber Valley says its raison d’être is to create an ecosystem for technology transfer and to provide supportive environments for AI start-ups.
