eBay has launched the world’s first ‘subconscious shopping experience’ in London. The Art of Shopping gallery-themed space is deploying neuroscience technology to capture untapped moments of inspiration and create personalised shopping carts.
The art-fuelled location, curated in partnership with Saatchi Art, combines visual cues found in displayed artworks with items from the eBay marketplace that produce a similar psychological response.
EEG technology will unlock micro-moments of inspiration experienced by guests during their Art of Shopping journey. Upon completion, visitors will receive personalised shopping carts filled with product suggestions based on their experience.
Last week, eBay released neuroscience-based research comparing the mindstates of ‘shop-y-cats’ (who follow the crowd, buying the same items as others) versus ‘inspired shoppers’ (those intent on finding more personal, colourful and unique items). The study showed that 84% of inspired shoppers experienced a prolonged high at checkout.
Before the year-end, eBay will unveil a new homepage leaning on artificial intelligence and machine learning to provide shoppers with a greater level of personalisation. eBay will serve up inventory and content tailored to shopper’s personal style, interests and activities/passions.
