alt-right to the fore

Facebook and Google are coming under heavy criticism once again for allowing alt-right trolls to surface content in the wake of the Las Vegas shootings. Rightwing social media users named the wrong suspect and quickly tied him to anti-Trump and pro-Hilary Clinton sentiments.

Conspiracy-heavy blog Gateway Pundit – handed White House press creds by the administration – published a story headlined Las Vegas Shooter Reportedly a Democrat Who Liked Rachel Maddow based on a review of Facebook ‘likes’, reports The Guardian.

Facebook’s Safety Check page, developed to support people during crises, promoted a story saying the shooter had Trump-hating views, while Google users searching for the wrongly named suspect were sent to the notorious alt-right 4chan thread.

“This should not have appeared for any queries, and we’ll continue to make improvements to prevent this from happening in the future,” a Google spokesperson says of the 4chan link.

A 2016 study published by Edelman found more people trusted search engines (63%) for news than newspapers and television (58%).
