Amazon deploys Alexa in hotel rooms

UK-based Village Hotels is looking to roll out virtual assistant Amazon Alexa across its 28 hotels. The company has set up Echo Dot speakers in its rooms in two trial locations – in Glasgow and Warrington – with the kit customised so that guest are able to directly ‘ask Village’ rather than speak to Alexa.

The in-room assistant at Village Hotels will answer standard queries and perform tasks such as providing information on restaurant, pool and gym opening times and local area activities, plus offer utility services such as delivering wakeup calls.

Alexa is currently going head-to-head with rival Apple Siri in the hospitality business. Wynn Resorts was the first hotel to deploy Echo devices at its 4,700-room Wynn Las Vegas property last year, while Marriott International began testing the two solutions in its Aloft hotel in Boston a few months ago. Best Western Hotels said at the beginning of June that it was testing Amazon Dot devices in its properties, with staff also informing Alexa on the status of rooms.

Update: Amazon is pushing hard to deploy Alexa in cars with VW and Ford looking to roll out voice control features later this year. "Given the automobile and some of the safety concerns, we think it's the ideal experience for the car," John Scumniotales, general manager for Amazon Alexa Automotive, tells Automotive News.
