Urban-X expands NYC start-up program

New York-based Urban-X, the Mini-backed accelerator, is expanding its tech start-up programme and is now offering a total of 10 new participants $100,000 in funding, plus access to $200,000 of capital. The upcoming batch of innovation-oriented firms will be based at the Urban-X HQ as MINI's ADO design centre in Brooklyn, and have access to Mini mentors in the shape of the car maker’s designers and engineers.

Urban-X, in partnership with investment firm Urban-S, recently completed its second cohort round and will take reps of some of those graduate firms on its recently announced Global Summer Spotlight Tour which will take in 13 cities. Eight of those locations will be in North America with the remainder situated in Europe. Urban-X will be using the trip to pick up likely candidates for the next round.

The second cohort included eight start-ups, among them Sencity, which is working on connected urban street furniture such as waste bins, Upcycles, a maker of human-electric cargo tricycles for moving goods around urban environments, and haptics design company WearWorks which using sensory feedback systems to communicate information entirely via touch.
