Rolling Stone plays with Google
Plugging into the free-content ethos of Google, Rolling Stone magazine has joined forces with the Silicon Valley giant to slot its editorial archive free-of-charge onto the Google Play newsstand. Rolling Stone says its long-tail content is regularly mined by readers and that Play will next year also host audio and video content. However, Google reportedly bought seven figures' worth of Rolling Stone ads as part of the tie-up, so maybe content isn’t as free as it used to be.
"Google's history of innovation makes them the perfect fit for our brand, which is why we wanted to try something totally unique together," say Gus Wenner, head of digital of Wenner Media, publisher of the magazine. Sadly, ‘innovation’ is a bit of a yesterday word, when what he should have deployed was ‘disruption’.
