Facebook's land grab
Facebook just keeps on building out its physical footprint. The social network has acquired a 56-acre industrial park south of its current Menlo Park HQ as it prepares to move operations to a new Frank Gehry-designed campus, Building 20, across the street from its current location. It’s not yet clear what Facebook plans to do with the land but it could deploy it as part of a Menlo Park city ‘visioning’ initiative which the company supports, and that could mean socially oriented mixed-use housing, shops and perhaps a hotel.
Facebook now holds sway over 200 acres up to the edge of the San Francisco Bay, and executives say they want to think beyond their walls to take advantage of trails, a railway easement and a tunnel to better connect their campuses and the neighborhood, according to the Silicon Valley Business Journal.
