Google has teamed up with UK-based Raspberry Pi to develop voice-activated services in the home à la Amazon Alexa. The initiative, tagged Artificial Intelligence Yourself, will plug into Raspberry Pi’s hugely popular affordable computer with the aim of bringing natural language processing to the home via a Voice HAT – Hardware Accessory on Top – board and speaker.

In order to get the kit out there, Raspberry Pi and Google are initially bundling it for free into the latest issue of the Raspberry Pi magazine, The Mag Pi.

Once the Artificial Intelligence Yourself system is up-and-running and a voice trigger is picked up, the stream is sent to the Google Cloud for speech-to-text conversion for comprehension, while a text-to-speech engine enables the system to talk back.

Raspberry Pi was launched as an educational programme and has shipped 12 million computers in just five years.
