Ford is opening a dedicated smart mobility innovation unit in London to develop transport solutions for Europe. The motor maker is setting up shop at the Here East digital campus at the Olympic Park in Stratford.

Ford specialists is aiming to work together with tech firms and leading academic institutions to come up with commercial smart technologies, such as ridesharing and driverless cars.

“This marks a new approach for us in Europe, allowing for the greater collaboration needed to tackle the urban transport challenges of tomorrow,” says Steven Armstrong, Ford’s European president.

The company is following in the footsteps of VW – among others – which in December launched a standalone company, MOIA, to tackle urban transportation issues. The German carmaker says it is looking to generate a substantial share of revenues from this new business by 2025.

Fast fact update: Dn&co designed the livery for the new shuttle buses in use across Here East. It features the Here East visual identity, with all vehicles  covered in a series of dot patterns inspired by the Here East Broadcast Centre’s glazing.
