A building for the Net
The world is set to get its first Internet museum, in the shape of InternetMuseum.Berlin which is planning to open its (physical) doors, finances permitting, before the close of 2015. And IM.B has the objective of guiding its visitors through the history of the most innovative idea of 20th century (which is the Internet) and of amazing them with the great digital thinkers and computer giants. Plus there will be hardware such as PDP-7 Unix and NeXTCube.
Fittingingly, IM.B is a crowdfunded venture and is looking to raise the €700,000 museum construction costs on Startnext, as well as from private sources. And 30,000 visitors a year is the initial target audience. “The Internet and the associated ongoing digitisation of society has become an integral part of our everyday lives and an economic basis for many people,” co-founder Paul Rascheja told the DPA.
