Crowded cash

Kickstarter

Music, film and video, and games were the leading Kickstarter categories by number of projects in 2014, but technology initiatives grabbed much of the cash, pocketing $125 million in pledged funds, equivalent almost one quarter of the finance successfully raised on Kickstarter last year, writes Steve Mullins. Design projects trailed tech, pulling in $97 million, ahead of games with $89 million.

Since launch, Kickstarter has seen $1.47 billion pledged to 77,000 successfully crowdfunded initiatives. Most funded projects have raised less than $10,000, while just 85 have managed to generate more than $1 million – 36 of these were for games ventures, 27 for tech and 12 for design. And the pledgers? There have been 7.7 million to date, with 2.3 of them repeat backers.
